The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : The question concerns Surat al-A'la. We hear some people, after the imam finishes reciting Surat al-A'la, send blessings upon Ibrahim and Musa (peace be upon them both). Is this correct, and is it permissible for the imam, if he hears one of the ma'mum (congregation) doing this, to rebuke them and say to them: "This may be considered speech during the prayer"? What is the case? I ask for your guidance.

The Shaykh : It is not from the Sunnah to send blessings upon them when they finish this surah. However, one is not prohibited from doing so, because it is a form of supplication for blessings and peace upon two of the prophets of Allah. It is not an address, nor is it speech that would invalidate the prayer. As for asking for mercy at the verse of mercy and seeking refuge at the verse of warning in voluntary prayers, this is a recommended practice (sunnah). In obligatory prayers, it is permissible. Therefore, in voluntary prayers, you should ask for mercy when you pass a verse of mercy, seek refuge when you pass a verse of warning, and glorify Allah when you pass a verse of glorification, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do so in the Tahajjud prayer. As for obligatory prayers, one is not prohibited from doing so, but it is not required of him to do it. Yes.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Yes, or he says, "O Allah, make us among them," when he hears the prayer of the believers.
