The questioner : The listener Abdullah Nasser from Jeddah says: I hear many of the ma'mum in many mosques when the imam recites the verse: [Al-Fatihah 1:5] they say: We seek help from Allah, and they raise their voices when the imam is reciting. Also, when the imam says: [Al-A'la 87:19] they say: peace be upon them. Also, when the imam finishes any surah in the Qur'an to bow, most of the ma'mum say: My Lord, forgive me and have mercy on me, and so on in many verses. Is this an innovation? Please inform us, may Allah reward you?
The Shaykh : It is prescribed for the ma'mum to listen to the recitation of his imam, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-A'raf 7:204] Imam Ahmad said: "They agreed that this is in the prayer". It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he forbade the Companions from reciting in the prayers where the imam recites aloud, except for the Umm al-Kitab (Surat al-Fatihah). Therefore, the ma'mum should listen to the recitation of his imam and not say anything. Yes, if the imam pauses and passes a verse of mercy or a verse of warning, the ma'mum may seek refuge in Allah at the verse of warning and ask for forgiveness at the verse of mercy.
As for their saying: We seek help from Allah, when he says:[Al-Fatihah 1:5] this has no basis, no reason, and no need for it, because the imam will say [Al-Fatihah 1:6-7] and they will respond to this supplication, so there is no need to say We seek help from Allah.
As for their saying when the imam recites[Al-A'la 87:19] peace be upon them, there is nothing wrong with this, because this is a place where the imam is silent, and there is no harm in the ma'mum saying peace be upon them.
As for some of them saying, or as for some of them asking for forgiveness when finishing the recitation before bowing, this has no basis, no justification, and no appropriateness, so leaving it is what is prescribed. Yes.
