Commentary on the poet’s saying: And He is the All-Forgiving, so if one came to Him with a measure of the earth full of sins *** other than shirk (associating partners with Allah), but rather from disobedience, He would come to Him with forgiveness filling that measure *** Glorified is He

The Shaykh : These are two of the names of Allah: al-Ghafur (the All-Forgiving), who overlooks the sins of His servants while concealing them, because forgiveness is overlooking a sin while concealing it. So if one came to Him with a measure of the earth full of sins, other than shirk (associating partners with Allah), He would meet that with forgiveness, as stated in the Qudsi Hadith:

O son of Adam, if you came to Me with a measure of the earth full of sins, then met Me not associating anything with Me, I would come to you with a measure of it full of forgiveness. "A measure of it" means its fullness or what approximates its fullness. "He met him with forgiveness filling his measure *** Glorified is He, vast in forgiveness." This great name, which encompasses this noble meaning, is one to which a person should attach his heart and should frequently seek forgiveness, seeking forgiveness until he realizes what this noble name indicates. The second name, he said: "And likewise, al-Tawwab is among His attributes." I wish the author had said "among His names," because al-Tawwab is undoubtedly one of the names of Allah. Allah the Exalted said: "And I am al-Tawwab, the Merciful." "And likewise, al-Tawwab is among His attributes" means among what is included in the attributes of repentance, otherwise it is a name. "And repentance in His attributes is of two types: Permission for His servant’s repentance and its acceptance *** after death, by the grace of the Bestower of Grace." May Allah have mercy on him. Repentance is of two types. The first type is the permission for the servant’s repentance, meaning by that the facilitation for the servant to repent. The "permission" in the author’s speech here refers to the qadri (decree-based) permission. Qadri permission means that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, permits by decree that the servant repents, so he repents. Then He bestows upon him a second grace by accepting the repentance. The evidence for that is His saying, the Exalted: "Then He accepted their repentance so that they would repent. Indeed, Allah is al-Tawwab, the Merciful." Did He accept their repentance previously or subsequently? The student: Previously. The Shaykh: Reflect. The student: Previously. The Shaykh: Reflect. The student: Previously. The Shaykh: What is the evidence? The student: "So that they would repent." The Shaykh: Because He said: "So that they would repent." So, "Then He accepted their repentance so that they would repent" means He permitted them by decree to repent, so He facilitated it for them, so that they would repent to Him, and He would accept their repentance from them. Allah the Exalted said: "And He is the One who accepts repentance from His servants and forgives sins." So the repentance of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is divided in the Book of Allah into two parts: previous repentance and subsequent repentance. Previous repentance is His facilitating the servant to repent, and the second is subsequent, which is by its acceptance. Yes...
