The Prayer of Repentance
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A young man says: In the early period of youth, I committed some sins, and I have repented to Allah, praise and thanks be to Allah, but something still remains in my heart. I have heard about the Prayer of Repentance, so I hope you will inform me about this. May Allah reward you with good.
A: Repentance wipes out what came before it and erases it, praise be to Allah, so it should not remain in your heart that anything of that is still there. It is obligatory for you to have a good opinion of your Lord and to believe that Allah has accepted your repentance if you were sincere in your repentance; for Allah says: [Al-Nur: 31] Thus, success is tied to repentance, so whoever repents has succeeded. And He, the Exalted, said: [Ta-Ha: 82] And He, the Exalted, is truthful in His news and His promise. And He, the Exalted, said: [Al-Tahrim: 8] And "perhaps" (‘asa) from Allah is obligatory.
So you must have a good opinion of your Lord, and that He has accepted your repentance if you were sincere in your repentance, regretting what you did, ceasing from it, and resolving not to return to it. Beware of waswas (whispers of doubt). Allah, (Exalted and Majestic is He), says in the Qudsi Hadith:Sahih al-Bukhari 7505 You should have a good opinion of Allah. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 2877a Muslim narrated it in his Sahih.
As for the Prayer of Repentance, it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: And success is from Allah.

It is obligatory for you to have a good opinion of your Lord and to believe that Allah has accepted your repentance if you were sincere in your repentance; for Allah says:
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow
So you must have a good opinion of your Lord, and that He has accepted your repentance if you were sincere in your repentance, regretting what you did, ceasing from it, and resolving not to return to it. I am to my slave as he thinks of Me
None of you should court death but only hoping good from Allah
As for the Prayer of Repentance, it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:
No servant commits a sin and then purifies himself, perfects his purification, then prays two rak'ahs, and then repents to Allah for his sin, but that Allah will accept his repentance.
