The questioner : Regarding the hadith about Ibrahim, the son of Maryam al-Qibtiyyah, in these narrations where he told 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, "Strike him with your sword," what is the most authentic narration? One narration mentions that the boy was on top of a palm tree, and another says that he saw him later when he had climbed the palm tree?

The Shaykh : He was on top of the palm tree. They saw that he was circumcised, so they dropped the punishment from him. He was on top of the palm tree.

The questioner : Very well, may Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : And beware of that.

The questioner : What is the story, O Shaykh, about being on top of the palm tree?

The Shaykh : The Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) slave woman, Maryam, was accused of having a boy. The news spread and reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he ordered 'Ali to kill this boy. It seems the boy had no knowledge of the matter; either he heard the news and fled, or he fled without any intention. He climbed a palm tree. You know that they did not wear lower garments like an izar, so his private parts were quickly exposed. When they saw our master 'Ali on the palm tree, they saw that he was circumcised, meaning his organ was cut off, so he was unable to commit the sin. Therefore, the innocence of this slave woman and the falsehood of the accusation became apparent.
