What is established in the voluntary prayer is established in the obligatory prayer.

The questioner : I mentioned in Tammam al-Mannah, may Allah preserve you, that when a man stands to pray the obligatory prayer, he is not to stop at the verse of mercy and ask for mercy. Then I came back to the obligatory prayer and said that he should recite the first tashahhud and then send blessings upon the Prophet, because the Prophet did this in the voluntary prayer. The point of difference is what I mentioned: the obligatory prayer is something transmitted by the masses, who heard it as they heard it in the night prayer, where they ask for mercy. As for the voluntary prayer, some of the Companions heard it, meaning they heard the Prophet send blessings upon himself in the seventh or eighth rak'ah, so the Prophet did it. We say we do it in the obligatory prayer. This is an example that clarifies, does it not?

The Shaykh : Yes, but I fear there is a trap in it. Please proceed.
