Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : I married a woman, and my marriage was in a forbidden manner, as I have heard, which is the marriage of shighar, where my father said to me: We will marry your sister to such-and-such a man, and he will marry us his sister, with a difference in the mahr. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah in this marriage? And what are the consequences? I hope for your guidance, may you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : If this that took place was without a condition, then it is not the marriage of shighar. That is, if your father, when he proposed the man's daughter for you, gave him the mahr, and then the man afterwards proposed your sister to your father and he gave him [the mahr], then this is not shighar. Accordingly, the marriage is valid for you and for the one who married your sister, and there is no blame on either of you in this. Shighar is when a man marries his ward to another on the condition that the other marries his ward to him, and there is no mahr between them.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
