Seeking Nearness to Allah the Exalted Through the Supplication of the Righteous Servant

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The seventh, the seventh: Seeking nearness to Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, through the supplication of the righteous. This means asking a righteous person to seek nearness to Allah for you, to supplicate for you, to supplicate for you. It is like the seeking nearness of the Companions through the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). A man entered on a Friday while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was delivering the sermon. He said, “O Messenger of Allah, the wealth has been destroyed and the paths have been cut off due to the scarcity of rain and vegetation. So supplicate to Allah to send us relief.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) raised his hands while on the pulpit and said:
O Allah, send down rain upon us; O Allah, send dowp rain upon us; O Allah, send down rain upon us
Sahih Muslim 897a
three times. Anas, who is the narrator of the hadith, said:
we did not see any cloud or any patch of it
Sahih Muslim 897a
The clouds are the spread-out mist, and the qiz'ah is the small piece.
there were no houses or buildings between us and (the mountain of ) Sal' وما بيننا وبين سلع من بيت ولا دار
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1518Sahih (Darussalam)
Sulayl is a known mountain in Medina from whose direction the clouds come. He said:
So a cloud like a shield came out from behind it
Do you know what a shield is, O brother Qam?
The student: A breastplate.

The Shaykh : What?
The student: A breastplate.

The Shaykh : A breastplate? No, that is incorrect. Rest. Who knows what a shield is?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : A warrior uses it to protect himself from weapons. It resembles a washbasin. Do you know what a washbasin is? What is it?
The student: A vessel.

The Shaykh : A vessel.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : The vessel with which you wash clothes.
The student: Large.

The Shaykh : Large. Good, rest.
There appeared a cloud in the shape of a shield from behind it, and as it (came high) in the sky it spread
Sahih Muslim 897a
Immediately, he said:
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not descend from the pulpit until the rain was dripping from his beard
Glory be to Allah, Glory be to the One capable of everything. This is among the signs of Allah and the signs of the Messenger of Allah. Among the signs of Allah is this great power: Allah created this cloud, it thundered and flashed, and it rained. Among the signs of the Messenger is that Allah the Exalted answered his supplication with such speed. If he had been a liar, Allah would not have answered his supplication. The rain remained for a full week; they did not see the sun. It rained. A man, or the first man from the second Friday, entered while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon. He said:
O Messenger of Allah, the wealth has been drowned and the buildings have collapsed, so supplicate to Allah to hold it back
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Narrated Masruq: One day I went to Ibn Mas`ud who said, "When Quraish delayed in embracing Islam, the Prophet (ﷺ) I invoked Allah to curse them, so they were afflicted with a (famine) year because of which many of them died and they ate the carcasses and Abu Sufyan came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, 'O Muhammad! You came to order people to keep good relation with kith and kin and your nation is being destroyed, so invoke Allah I ? So the Prophet (ﷺ) I recited the Holy verses of Sirat-Ad-Dukhan: 'Then watch you For the day that The sky will Bring forth a kind Of smoke Plainly visible.' (44.10) When the famine was taken off, the people renegade once again as nonbelievers. The statement of Allah, (in Sura "Ad- Dukhan"-44) refers to that: 'On the day when We shall seize You with a mighty grasp.' (44.16) And that was what happened on the day of the battle of Badr." Asbath added on the authority of Mansur, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) prayed for them and it rained heavily for seven days. So the people complained of the excessive rain. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'O Allah! (Let it rain) around us and not on us.' So the clouds dispersed over his head and it rained over the surroundings."
Sahih al-Bukhari 1020
and he pointed to the sides. Wherever he pointed, the clouds parted, and they went out walking in the sun. This is seeking nearness to Allah by what? By the supplication of the righteous. That is, by asking the righteous man to supplicate for you. When the people were afflicted with drought in one of the years of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, he said:

O Allah, we seek nearness to You through our Prophet, so send us rain. And we seek nearness to You through the uncle of our Prophet, so send us rain. Then he asked al-Abbas to stand and supplicate to Allah, and he supplicated. But is it recommended to ask a man to supplicate to Allah for you? The answer is: No, it is not recommended. You should supplicate to Allah yourself, based on the saying of your Lord, Exalted and Majestic is He: “Call upon Me, I will respond to you.” But if it is for the benefit of the people, such as if you ask a man in whom you hope for goodness to supplicate to Allah the Exalted to send down rain, or to heal such-and-such a sick person, meaning not for yourself, then there is no harm in it, because it is doing good to others. But for yourself, do not do it, because this request has two dangers. The first danger is that it is a type of humiliation; a person asks as if he is saying, “Give me a riyal.” The second is that it involves deceiving the one being asked. How is it deceiving the one being asked? The one being asked becomes pleased with himself and puffs up, saying, “I am a wali (close friend of Allah) among the awliya (close friends of Allah); people ask me to supplicate to Allah for them.” Harm results from that. But some scholars said: If you ask your brother to supplicate to Allah for you for the sake of doing good to him, not for him to do good to you, but for you to do good to him. How do you do good to him? You intend that he will be rewarded for his supplication for you, because it is doing good. And you also intend that the angel will say to him when he supplicates for you in your absence, “Ameen, and for you the same.” As for a person, whenever he sees a man in whom he hopes for goodness and righteousness, saying, “So-and-so, supplicate to Allah for me” or “I ask you for your supplication,” this is not good. Yes. The student: May Allah reward you with good. The Shaykh: Good, how many have we mentioned now? The student: Seven. The Shaykh: Seven types of seeking nearness. What remains for us is the answer to the brother’s question.
