What is the ruling on playing with cards?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward you. The questioner says: What is the ruling on playing with cards?

The Shaykh : Perhaps it is with cards?

The questioner : No, no, with cards, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Open.

The questioner : What is it? It is not marked, but it appears to be cards. How is it?

The Shaykh : Every person has what he intends. The questioner is present.

The questioner : Bridge, O Shaykh. Bridge.

The Shaykh : It is written as Bridge.

The questioner : During the times of prayer?

The Shaykh : Fine, the question is finished. First, know, O my Muslim brother, that you were created only to worship Allah, and that every hour and moment that passes without your worship of Allah is a loss and a waste. And if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, then let him say what is good or remain silent. من كان يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر فليقل خيرا أو ليصمت
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2500Sahih (Darussalam)
then the action is even more so. Do good, or else leave it. And according to what we have heard about players of Bridge, it consumes time like fire in dry grass, and time is wasted for many hours as if they were minutes. This means that the person has wasted his precious time with this play. And listen to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back (100) That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." حَتَّى إِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدَهُمُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ رَبِّ ارْجِعُونِ لَعَلِّي أَعْمَلُ صَالِحاً فِيمَا تَرَكْتُ
[Al-Mu'minun 23:99-100]
He did not say: "Perhaps I will build palaces in what I left and buy cars." No,
That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind لَعَلِّي أَعْمَلُ صَالِحاً فِيمَا تَرَكْتُ
[Al-Mu'minun 23:100]
So it is not fitting for the believer to waste his times in such play. And some of the scholars of knowledge have explicitly stated that playing it is forbidden, and among those who explicitly stated this is our Shaykh Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Sa'di (may Allah have mercy on him).
