Discussion on Zakah and Its Issues

The Shaykh : We spoke last night about the conditions for the obligation of zakah, and we said that zakah is obligatory upon every Muslim, and that there is no difference between

The Shaykh : the male and the female

The Shaykh : and the sane and the insane

The Shaykh : and the young and the old
The student: and the free and the slave
The Shaykh : and upon the free and the slave, or did we say there is no difference between the free and the slave? Hmm?
The student: ... .
The Shaykh : I mean, we said it is not said that there is a difference between the free and the slave, because the slave does not own full ownership. Well done.
Some people find it difficult to understand how it is obligatory upon the insane and the young, given that the pen has been lifted from them? This is the first question we will answer. We say that zakah is not obligatory upon the person himself, like prayer; zakah is obligatory in the wealth, by the saying of Allah the Exalted:[At-Tawbah 9:103]. And the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he sent Mu'adh to Yemen: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 4:30. This is evidence from the Qur'an and from the Sunnah as well. Evidence from reflection and reason: that the desires of the poor and the longing of the poor are for the wealth or for the owner of the wealth? For the wealth. We say, where is the zakah of these great amounts of wealth? Let us suppose that one of the young people had his father leave him, for example, a billion. The poor people will say, where is the zakah of this billion? Therefore, it was wise that zakah be obligatory in the wealth of orphans, in the wealth of orphans, yes, in the wealth of orphans while they are young, and in the wealth of the insane. Good. We mentioned previously, last night, that zakah has recipients, that zakah has recipients whom Allah the Mighty and Majestic has specified.
We do not accept the left hand, and so the answer will come from someone else.
The student: Allah the Exalted said:

Indeed, the charities are for the poor and the needy and those employed to collect them and those whose hearts are to be reconciled and for freeing captives and for those in debt and in the cause of Allah and for the wayfarer, an obligation from Allah, and Allah is Knowing and Wise. The Shaykh: May Allah reward you. These are eight categories, and Allah the Mighty and Majestic took charge of distributing zakah among them, and He said at the end: an obligation from Allah, and Allah is Knowing and Wise. Good. Is it permissible to spend zakah on building mosques in poor neighborhoods? Stand up. The student: It is not permissible. The Shaykh: It is not permissible. Wait, good. Why is it not permissible? Because Allah did not mention it in the Qur'an, but He said, "Indeed, the charities are for the poor," and so on. May Allah reward you. Good. If someone were to say that building mosques falls under the saying of Allah the Exalted: "and in the cause of Allah," and that the meaning of "the cause of Allah" is all paths of good, including building mosques. Is his statement sound or weak? The student: Weak. The Shaykh: Yes. The student: His statement is weak. The Shaykh: His statement is weak. Why? The student: Because in that case, it would not fall under the verse. The Shaykh: Well done. Because if we said "in the cause of Allah" is general for all good, there would be no point to the restriction. So who is meant, or what is meant by His saying "in the cause of Allah"? The student: Jihad. The Shaykh: Jihad in the cause of Allah. And what is the criterion for jihad in the cause of Allah? The student: Fighting so that the word of Allah is the supreme. The Shaykh: May Allah reward you. It is fighting so that the word of Allah is the supreme. Good. Yes, or defending the Islamic lands. And defending the Islamic lands is by which the word of Allah becomes the supreme. Now, the evaluation of the answer will be from you, very good. I mean, it did not reach the level of excellent, high, or good, or acceptable. How many degrees did it rise? Acceptable is the second, good is the third, very good is the fourth, and excellent is the fifth. So it is in very good, and some of you are excellent. So we ask Allah the Exalted to grant us and you beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds. And now to the questions. We ask Allah to guide us to the truth. The questioner: In the name of Allah, and all praise is for Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the best of creation, our master Muhammad, and upon his family and his companions. We begin, O honorable Shaykh.
