Among the customs I consider bad in our village is a woman sitting in her home with non-mahram men who enter the house, whether they are her husband’s friends, her father’s friends, or others.

The questioner : Among the customs I consider bad in our village is a woman sitting in her home with non-mahram men who enter the house, whether they are her husband’s friends, her father’s friends, her cousins, or her maternal cousins. Many non-mahram men, such as the neighbor or the sister’s husband, [are present]. What is the ruling on this? May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : The ruling on this is that a woman should not mix with men, even if they are her relatives, because that is a cause of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation). It is best for the men to have a separate sitting area and for the women to have a separate sitting area with their families, so that the men are kept apart and the women are kept apart, thereby avoiding the fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) that is feared from mixing.
