Mentioning the impact of Imam Malik regarding Istiwa' (rising above the Throne)
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : A man came to the Imam of the Abode of Migration, Malik ibn Anas (may Allah have mercy on him), and said: "O Abu 'Abdullah, How did He rise? Listen, [Taha 20:5] How did He rise?" He did not say, "What is the meaning of rising?" He said, "How." So the question is about what? About the manner, not the meaning. Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) lowered his head until sweat covered him, meaning until he was drenched in sweat, due to the magnitude of the question in his heart. Then he raised his head and said his famous statement: "O this one, the rising is not unknown, the rising is not unknown, and the manner is not conceivable. Belief in it is obligatory, and asking about it is a religious innovation. I do not see you as anything but an innovator." Then he ordered that he be taken out of the mosque. Is this a river or not a river? More severe: taken out of the mosque because it is a question of an innovator. You are asking about the manner of the attributes of Allah. Who asks about the manner of the attributes of Allah? Except a man who is being obstinate and is an innovator. For this reason, we find the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and by Allah they are better than us and more reverent toward Allah, and more eager than us to know Allah by His names and attributes, never asked Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, who possessed knowledge that no one else possessed regarding the attributes of Allah, never asked about the manner at all.
