How the manner of rising above the Throne is among the unseen matters that a Muslim must accept

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Second: The manner of rising above the Throne is among the matters of the unseen about which the Muslim, the one who believes in Allah and the Last Day, must submit and not ask about its manner. Listen to the words of Imam Malik ibn Anas (may Allah have mercy on him), the Imam of the City of Migration. He was sitting in a circle in one of the mosques of the Prophet's Mosque (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man asked him, saying: "O Abu 'Abdullah,
The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established. الرحمن على العرش استوى
[Taha 20:5]
"
He lowered his head, meaning he bowed his head until he was drenched in sweat, and sweat covered him because of the severity of the question and his (may Allah be pleased with him) embarrassment that the questioner should ask about the manner of one of the attributes of Allah. Then he raised his head and said his famous words, which would be cheap if written in gold and platinum. He said to him: "The rising above the Throne is not unknown", meaning we all know it; He rose above something, meaning He is above it, and no one has any difficulty with that. "And the manner is not comprehensible", meaning we do not comprehend it, i.e., we do not grasp it with our minds, and the Sunnah has not come with it. "And belief in it is obligatory", belief in what? Belief in the rising above the Throne, because Allah has affirmed it for Himself. "And asking about it is an innovation", meaning that if you ask about the manner of the rising above the Throne, your question is an innovation, because no one better than you has asked it, directed to someone more knowledgeable than me. Who are they?
The student: The Companions.

The Shaykh : The Companions did not ask about it, yet you come and ask. Then he said to him: "I do not see you as anything but an innovator". This is from the insight of the believer, meaning I do not think you are anything but a man who is an innovator, seeking to mislead people. Then he ordered that he be taken out of the mosque; he was not expelled from the circle, but taken out of the mosque. And thus the believing person must be firm and strong, not to be manipulated by innovators. There is a place for severity and a place for leniency. Listen:
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves محمد رسول الله والذين معه أشداء على الكفار رحماء بينهم
[Al-Fath 48:29]
Why were they severe toward the disbelievers? Because only severity is of benefit with the disbeliever.
O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination. يا أيها النبي جاهد الكفار والمنافقين واغلظ عليهم ومأواهم جهنم وبئس المصير
[At-Tawbah 9:73]
There is a place for severity and a place for leniency. He ordered that he be taken out of the mosque. This answer that Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) gave was adopted by the scholars of the Sunnah after him, and they began to say this regarding every attribute of Allah when a questioner asks about its manner. If someone were to say: "Allah descends to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains, and He says: Who will call upon Me that I may answer him? Who will ask of Me that I may give him? Who will seek My forgiveness that I may forgive him?" How does He descend? What do we say? We say as Malik said: The descending is not unknown, the manner is not comprehensible, belief in it is obligatory, and asking about it is a religious innovation. It is clear, my brothers. Build your creed upon this, build it upon this, and do not turn to the scholars of theology who built their creed upon discourse. You find one of them wanting to establish what he wants to establish in multiple pages, as if it is straw that holds nothing, because it is not built upon the Book and the Sunnah. It is merely rationalizations, which are illusions and imaginations. So, what is your creed, O believer, with which you will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection regarding the rising of Allah above His Throne?
