Principle. The sayings of the Imams are used as evidence for, not as evidence in themselves

The Shaykh : Pay attention to this principle; it is a useful one: "The sayings of the scholars are not used as evidence, but evidence is sought for them". Therefore, if someone says, "So-and-so said such and such," we say, "Where is his evidence? Where is his evidence?" so that we build our worship upon the guidance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Keep this in mind, O brother, O noble brother who has come to the House of Allah and the mosque of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Keep this in mind: no one among the creation, other than the Messenger of Allah, has his sayings serve as a proof for the servants of Allah, ever, no matter what his status is, no matter what his status is among his people. It is not a proof. The proof is in what? In the saying of Allah and the saying of His Messenger. And listen: [An-Nisa 4:59] From whom? [An-Nisa 4:59] For Allah said: [An-Nisa 4:59] That is better now and better in outcome, meaning in the end, in the Hereafter. And if you differ in anything, to whom is the judgment? To Allah. And Allah the Exalted has made it clear to us, saying: [An-Nisa 4:59] And on the Day of Resurrection, Allah will not ask you what you answered so-and-so or so-and-so. He says, What? Look, this is the message regarding tawhid (the oneness of Allah). [Al-Qasas 28:62] They will be asked on the Day of Resurrection about two things: about tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and about the messengerships. [Al-Qasas 28:62] [Al-Qasas 28:65] Fulfill this, O my brother. Fulfill the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. After the prayer, the question will be, if Allah wills.
