The questioner : May Allah reward you. He says:The questioner : The question is frequently asked about this issue, which is how one should deal with neighbors who do not pray in the mosque, and they have advised them and put in great effort with them to no avail, or one of them works in a bank and they also advised him. Do they eat from his food if he invites them? That is, does the prohibition of one who has forbidden wealth extend to others?

The Shaykh : Yes. As for the first issue: if they have a neighbor who does not pray, it is obligatory for them to advise this neighbor, admonish him, and warn him of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). If he complies and starts praying, that is what is required. If he does not comply, then they should refer him to the competent authorities in order to compel him to pray. And if they refer him to the competent authorities, their responsibility is thereby discharged. Let it be known that when a person fulfills his obligation in advising, his responsibility is discharged, by the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
Not upon you, [O Muhammad], is [responsibility for] their guidance, but Allah guides whom He wills.
[Al-Baqarah 2:272]
And He (Mighty and Majestic) says:
upon you is only the [duty of] notification, and upon Us is the account.
[Ar-Ra'd 13:40]
And He says to our Prophet:
(21) So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder. (22) You are not over them a controller. (23) However, he who turns away and disbelieves - (24) Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment.
[Al-Ghashiyah 88:21-24]
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) certainly tried to make his uncle Abu Talib submit to Islam, but he refused and he died upon shirk (associating partners with Allah), may Allah protect us from that. For when his death approached, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was saying to him: “O my uncle, say: There is no god but Allah.” And there were two men from Quraysh with him, so whenever he was about to say that, they said to him: “Do you desire to abandon the religion of Abdul Muttalib?” And that was the religion of shirk (associating partners with Allah). So the last thing he said was: “I am upon the religion of Abdul Muttalib,” and he refused to say: “There is no god but Allah.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saddened by that and said: “I will seek forgiveness for you as long as I am not forbidden from doing so.” So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) revealed: “Indeed, you cannot guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills.” And he forbade him to seek forgiveness for him and said:
It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of Hellfire.
[At-Tawbah 9:113]
And Allah (the Exalted) answered Ibrahim’s seeking of forgiveness for his father, who was a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah), saying: “And the seeking of forgiveness by Ibrahim for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him,” where he said: ...
I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.
[Maryam 19:47]
Allah (the Exalted) said:
But when it became apparent to Abraham that his father was an enemy to Allah, he disassociated himself from him. Indeed was Abraham compassionate and patient.
[At-Tawbah 9:114]

So, my brother, if you have offered advice and fulfilled the obligation of advice
So whoever is guided - it is for [the benefit of] his soul; and whoever goes astray only goes astray to its detriment
[Az-Zumar 39:41]

As for the one who consumes riba (usury or interest), whose wealth is from riba, or most of his wealth is from riba, or most of his wealth is from bribes, or most of his wealth is from theft, do you eat from his wealth? The answer is that it is better to abstain from it, without a doubt. But you may eat from his wealth except for what is forbidden in itself, for it is not permissible for you to eat from that. However, if boycotting him and not responding to his invitation serves a benefit such that he is deterred, then boycotting him is obligatory and not responding to his invitation is obligatory, in order that Allah may guide him and he may be deterred. This is a rule regarding all people of sins: do we boycott them or not? We say that boycotting is a remedy; if it is beneficial, we use it, and if it is not beneficial, we do not use it. Because the person who commits a sin, no matter how great it is, if it is less than kufr (disbelief), is a believer, and it is not permissible to boycott a believer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is not permissible for a Muslim to have estranged relations with his brother beyond three nights, the one turning one way and the other turning the other way when they meet; the better of the two is one who is the first to give a greeting.
Sahih Muslim 2560a
So, if we find a sinner and we see him, or we see him, if there is a benefit in boycotting him such that he feels ashamed and is deterred from his sin, we boycott him; otherwise, we do not.
