Shaykh, may Allah bless you, if... Welcome, welcome...

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He was flogged, and he had two mounts with him in that expedition, meaning he was a wealthy man who could have gone out to fight, but his soul was tempted to delay; he said, "I will go out tomorrow, I will go out tomorrow, I will go out tomorrow," until the time passed.
And when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, Ka'b ibn Malik came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, you have been given a strong argument."
I can argue and dispute.
And if I had sat with a man other than you, I would have known how to speak, but by Allah, I will not say anything that you would be pleased with today and by which Allah would expose me tomorrow.
Look at his faith; his faith is amazing.
So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "As for this one, he has spoken the truth. Go, and Allah will judge between you and your two companions." Then he ordered the people to boycott them.
They did not speak to him, not even his relatives; they did not speak to him, even though he was the best of people in character and the most enduring, Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Ka'b ibn Malik says: "I would go to him and greet him, but I did not know whether he moved his lips to return the greeting or not."
Even though he was the best of people in character, may Allah's prayers and blessings be upon him.
And when I stood to pray, he would look at me with his eyes. But when I looked at him, he would turn away. They remained in this state of boycott for fifty nights. Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him)—Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him)—would pass by the wall of Abu Qatadah, who was his maternal uncle and the person he loved most, and he would greet his uncle, but the uncle would not return his greeting.
He was his cousin and the most beloved of people to him, but he did not return his greeting, in obedience to Allah and His Messenger.
He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah
[An-Nisa 4:80]
He did not return his greeting.
So Ka'b ibn Malik wept and said: "I call upon you by Allah, do you know that I hate Allah and His Messenger?" He remained silent. He called upon him again, and he remained silent. In the end, he said: "Allah knows best."
He did not answer him; he said, "Allah knows best."
So he returned. Then Ka'b was tested with a great calamity. The King of Ghassan sent him a letter saying: "It has reached us that your companion has slandered you, and you are not in a place of humiliation or lowliness. So come to us, and we will support you."
Meaning, come to us, we will support you, we will make you like us, and he is a king who will make him the son of a king.
I said: "This is from the trials." Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "So he took the letter and went to the oven and used it to start a fire."
He burned it out of fear that one day his soul might be tempted to submit to this king and go to him, and this is in the category of preventing harm and blocking the means to harm.
When forty nights had passed for them—forty nights during which the people did not speak to them, having boycotted them—the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent to them, saying: "Separate yourselves from your wives." The messenger came to Ka'b and said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commands you to separate yourself from your wife." He said: "Should I divorce her, or what?"
Meaning, should I just boycott her while she is under my protection, or should I divorce her? If he said, "Divorce her," he divorced her, and he had no attachment to her.
He said: "This is what the Messenger said." So he said to his wife: "Go back to your family."
She went to her people, and he remained for ten nights in the state described by Allah in His Noble Book:
to the point that the earth closed in on them in spite of its vastness
[At-Tawbah 9:118]
and their souls confined them and they were certain that there is no refuge from Allah except in Him
[At-Tawbah 9:118]
then Allah relieved them.
Relief came to them, and Allah turned to them in mercy. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) their repentance at night. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the morning, he prayed the Fajr prayer and informed the Companions of what Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, had revealed. When he informed them, and Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was...
The earth became so narrow for him that he could not face people.
He was praying in his house. So while he was on the night on which the repentance was revealed, praying on the roof of one of their houses, he heard a caller who had ascended al-Sala'.
Sal' is a mountain in Medina that is well known.
He was saying: "O Ka'b ibn Malik, rejoice in the repentance of Allah for you."
This, by Allah, is the great glad tidings; we ask Allah the Exalted to accept our repentance.
"Rejoice in the repentance of Allah for you." So he borrowed two garments from his companions and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And there was a rider who had mounted his horse to bring the good news to Ka'b ibn Malik. So the matter was not easy, but the voice was faster than him. When he entered the mosque and approached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the face of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), which the day before had not returned his greeting in a way he could hear, was now beaming with joy, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him, that Allah had turned to him in mercy. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Ka'b, rejoice in the best day that has passed for you since your mother bore you."
And He informed him of Allah's acceptance of his repentance.
He said: "O Messenger of Allah, is this from you or from Allah?" He said: "Rather, it is from Allah." So he thanked Allah for that.
So look at what happened from this great distress in which they remained, with their sincerity and faith: Allah revealed a Book about them that is recited until the Day of Resurrection. Their story is recited until the Day of Resurrection; Muslims read it in their prayers, in their night prayers, and in their prayers, and they draw near to Allah the Exalted by reciting their story, and they receive ten good deeds for every letter they read. Who attains this benefit? But this is the benefit of turning to Allah the Mighty and Majestic, for He, Glorified and Exalted is He, does not disappoint the one who hopes in Him. And the benefit of sincerity. So the important thing is that the boycotting of Ka'b ibn Malik and his two companions had a great benefit, which is that they turned to Allah, were sincere to Allah, were sincere with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and remained firm in their faith. So there was a great benefit in their boycotting. If boycotting one who commits a sin by leaving an obligatory act or doing a forbidden act has a benefit, then he is boycotted until the benefit is realized. But as for one whose boycotting does not benefit anything, but only increases the severity of the matter and distance from the people of good, then he is not boycotted, because the Shari'ah came with benefits and the repelling of harms. If we know that if we boycott this sinner, he will only increase in evil and hatred toward us and hatred toward the good with us, then we do not boycott him; we greet him and return his greeting, because he is a believer, even if he disobeys Allah. And a believer is not boycotted for more than three days. This is the ruling regarding what is related to preservation.
And in the end, it saddens me to see Muslims today passing by one another without one of them greeting the other. They meet, and the shoulder of one strikes the shoulder of the other, and he does not greet him, may Allah protect us from that, as if he passed by a corpse or a Jew or a Christian, even though he is his brother. And with this, if he greets, what does he gain? Ten good deeds, cash, firmness of faith, love, affection, entering Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
By him in whose hand my soul is, you will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another: should I not guide you to something doing which you will love one another: spread out salutation among you.
Sunan Abi Dawud 5193Sahih (Al-Albani)
He made clear that spreading the greeting is one of the causes of love, and love is part of faith, and faith is a cause for entering Paradise. It is very sad for us to see Muslims meeting one another without greeting, and perhaps, perhaps they are brothers, classmates in study, whether study in the mosque or study in the college or institute or other schools, and they do not greet one another. So what is the benefit of knowledge? What is the benefit of seeking knowledge if the student of knowledge is not raised with the good upbringing indicated by the Book and the Sunnah, and upon which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was? So what is the benefit of his learning if he is the same as the ignorant person, or if the ignorant person is not better than him?
For this reason, I urge you to spread the greeting for its great benefits, and it does not harm because it is an act of the tongue, and the tongue, if it works from morning to evening, does not get tired or weary. So we ask Allah for guidance, success, protection, and repentance for us and for you. Indeed, He is Able to do all things.
