The questioner : He says:The questioner : Your Eminence, we have heard the discussion on the virtue of the greeting of peace, so what is the ruling on a man greeting a woman and a woman greeting a man?

The Shaykh : Yes, the ruling on a man greeting a woman, if she is among his acquaintances, is that there is no harm, such as if she is a member of the household, like his brother’s wife, on the condition that it does not lead to fitnah (trial, discord or temptation). However, if she is not among his acquaintances, he does not greet her. But there is a distinction between men: for example, a man who has religious and social standing, we might say that if he passes by an elderly woman or the like, he should greet her. As for one who is not in that position, he does not greet. What we see is to close the door, so that a man does not greet a woman, nor a woman greet a man, except if she is among his acquaintances, in which case there is nothing wrong. Yes.
