The questioner : He says:The questioner : May Allah reward you with all good, O honorable Shaykh, and benefit us with your knowledge, and may Allah prolong your life

The Shaykh : in His obedience

The questioner : in His obedience

The Shaykh : Yes

The questioner : He says: Is it permissible to kiss the mushaf, or is it a religious innovation? And is it permissible to say: "Truthful is Allah the Exalted" after finishing the recitation of the Qur'an? Please give us a ruling, and may you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : As for the first part of the question, we have already spoken about it and said that it is a religious innovation. One does not kiss the mushaf. There is nothing that is kissed that has no sensation, except for one thing. What is it? The Black Stone. And yet, kissing the Black Stone is not for seeking blessing from it, as some of the common people think. Some of the common people think that kissing the Black Stone is for seeking blessing from it. For this reason, you will find a man taking the Stone in his hand, wiping it, and then if he has a boy with him, he wipes the boy's face with his hand to seek blessing from it, or perhaps he wipes his chest. This is an error. The Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, kissed it and said:
I know that you are only a stone and you cannot cause harm or bring benefit. Were it not that I saw the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ )kiss you, I would not have kissed you. إني لأعلم أنك حجر لا تضر ولا تنفع ولولا أني رأيت الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم يقبلك ما قبلتك
Musnad Ahmad 381A repeat of the previous report] (Darussalam)
Therefore, wiping the Stone and kissing it is an act of worship. And anything other than that is not wiped or kissed: not the mushaf, not books of hadith, not the chamber of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the chamber of his grave, nor anything else. There is nothing that is kissed at all, except for the Black Stone.
The second part is his saying "Truthful is Allah the Exalted" when he finishes the recitation. This is also a religious innovation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he finished the recitation, did not say that. If this had been prescribed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have said it. The Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) asked 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud to recite to him, so he said: "O Messenger of Allah, how can I recite to you when it was revealed to you?" He said: "I love to hear it from someone else." So he recited to him from Surat al-Nisa' until he reached the words of the Exalted: "How will it be when We bring from every nation a witness, and bring you as a witness over these?" He said: "That is sufficient," meaning that is enough. He said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his eyes were shedding tears." May Allah's prayers and peace be upon him. Because this scene is a great scene on the Day of Resurrection, when a witness is brought from every nation, and the Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) is brought as a witness over them. 'Isa ibn Maryam said to Allah:
And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness. وكنت شهيدا عليهم ما دمت فيهم فما توفيتني كنت أنت الرقيب عليهم وأنت على كل شيء شهيد
[Al-Ma'idah 5:117]
And when he said "That is sufficient," Ibn Mas'ud did not say "Truthful is Allah the Exalted." And Zayd ibn Thabit recited Surat al-Najm to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and finished it, and he did not say "Truthful is Allah the Exalted." It is known that the phrase "Truthful is Allah the Exalted" is an act of worship, because it is praise of Allah with truthfulness, and worship cannot be performed by a person unless it is prescribed by Allah and His Messenger. Accordingly, a person is prohibited from saying "Truthful is Allah the Exalted" when he finishes the Qur'an. He is prohibited from doing so, and it is said to him: "My brother, if it had been good, they would have preceded us to it." The Companions used to recite the Book in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and in his absence, and they did not conclude their recitation with this phrase.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh. The questioner says...

The Shaykh : Did sleep come to you?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Never?
