The questioner : He says:The questioner : May the Shaykh be honored, I bought a piece of land for two hundred and thirty thousand riyals, and I wanted to sell it for four hundred thousand riyals, but I did not sell it. Then I was offered seven hundred and seventy thousand riyals for it.

The Shaykh : How much was the offer?

The questioner : Seven hundred and seventy thousand riyals.

The Shaykh : How do you pronounce it?

The questioner : Seven hundred and seventy thousand riyals. How do you pronounce it?

The Shaykh : Between the movement of the sin.
The student: I was offered

The Shaykh : The movement of the sin.
The student: Seven hundred.

The Shaykh : Seven hundred?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : It means one out of seven out of a hundred.
The student: No.

The Shaykh : Seven hundred. What does it mean, everyone?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : It means one out of seven out of a hundred.
The student: Seven hundred.

The Shaykh : The correct pronunciation is sab'a mi'ah, with the sin having a fathah.
The student: It overcame us. A similar mistake is that some people say three hundred with an alif. This is a mistake; the alif is not mentioned. The correct form is three hundred, five hundred, seven hundred, as Allah the Exalted said:
And they remained in their cave for three hundred ولبثوا في كهفهم ثلاثمائة
[Al-Kahf 18:25]
Do not say three hundred, for if you did, it would be an error and an addition to the Qur'an.

The questioner : Let us repeat the question.

The Shaykh : All right, repeat the question.

The questioner : I bought a piece of land for two hundred and thirty thousand riyals, and I wanted to sell it for four hundred thousand riyals, but I did not sell it. Then I was offered seven hundred and seventy thousand riyals for it.

The Shaykh : Seven hundred?

The questioner : Seven hundred.

The Shaykh : Seven hundred with a fathah on the 'ayn?

The questioner : Seven hundred.

The Shaykh : Yes, that is right.

The questioner : And I did not sell it. So, is zakat due on the amount I bought it for, or the first amount I was offered for it, or the last amount?

The Shaykh : We will give you a rule for this: For trade goods, the criterion is what they are worth at the time zakat becomes due. For all trade goods, whether real estate, land, cars, or goods in shops, the criterion is not what one paid for them, nor what they were worth during the lunar year, but what they are worth when zakat is due. For example: I bought a piece of land for one hundred thousand, and during the lunar year it was worth five hundred thousand, and at the end of the lunar year it was worth three hundred thousand.
On how much is the zakat? On three hundred. The zakat is on three hundred. I bought it for five hundred, and during the lunar year it was worth three hundred, and at the end of the lunar year it was worth one hundred. On how much is the zakat?
The student: One hundred.

The Shaykh : The zakat is on one hundred. The criterion is what it is worth when zakat becomes due. Pay attention to this. And based on this, we can now answer this question. What is the criterion? Is it seven hundred or four hundred? It is seven hundred. The criterion is seven hundred, because that is its value when zakat becomes due.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace.
The student: May Allah keep you in goodness.

The Shaykh : May He keep you in goodness.
The student: A blessed tenth.

The Shaykh : For everyone.
The student: May you be well.

The Shaykh : May Allah preserve you.
The student: O Shaykh, may Allah forgive you.

The Shaykh : Is there no question?
