A man has real estate and zakah becomes obligatory on him, so he paid one hundred riyals for every thousand riyals, then he was informed that it is twenty-five riyals for every thousand riyals; what is the ruling on the money?

The questioner : The honorable Shaykh, may Allah preserve you
A man has real estate and wants to pay zakah, so he paid one hundred riyals for every thousand riyals. After he paid it and finished, he was told: it is twenty-five riyals for every thousand riyals. What is the ruling on that?

The Shaykh : The ruling on that is that the excess is voluntary charity for him. That is, if a person pays more than the zakah because he thinks that is what is obligatory on him, it is voluntary charity. Perhaps Allah the Exalted will reward him with the reward of the obligatory act, and the reward of the obligatory act is greater than the reward of voluntary acts. Now, he paid one hundred for the thousand; what is the voluntary portion?
The student: Seventy-five.

The Shaykh : Seventy-five; if he had given it voluntarily as charity, he would be rewarded for it. But if he paid it as zakah, his reward for it is greater, by the saying of Allah Blessed and Exalted is He in the Holy Hadith:
And the most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him ما تقرب إلي عبدي بشيء أحب إلي مما افترضته عليه
Sahih al-Bukhari 6502
.
But say: if he intended these seventy-five riyals for three upcoming years, is it sufficient or not? It is not sufficient. The answer is that it is not sufficient, by the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. إنما الأعمال بالنيات وإنما لكل امرئ ما نوى
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
. Yes, did you understand what I am saying? What did I say?

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : About what?

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : You did well. Now, if he intended it for three upcoming years?

The questioner : It is not sufficient.

The Shaykh : It is not sufficient. Why?

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : You have done well, may Allah bless you. Yes.
