The questioner : In the interpretation of the verses of Surat al-Najm, Allah the Exalted mentioned regarding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that his sight did not deviate and he did not transgress. What is your opinion, O honorable Shaykh, regarding the Sufis who say that the ultimate goal of worship is for a person to be annihilated in the One who is remembered, until he does not know whether he is alive or dead? Does their action have a basis, and is this considered among the virtues or the vices?

The Shaykh : Yes, I believe that this statement does not come from anyone but a madman who has been relieved of religious obligation. Why? What ruling is applied to one who does not know whether he is alive or dead?
The student: A madman.

The Shaykh : Yes, by madness, there is no doubt, there is no ambiguity in this. And indeed, the extremists among the Sufis reach the level of madness. The Shaykh al-Islam mentioned that one of them says:

Meaning, his garment, his garment contains nothing but Allah. The things people mention about them are all madness, and I seek refuge in Allah. So we consider that this man is not one we speak about because he is a madman, and he has relieved us of himself through his madness. But there are known paths of the Sufis that are below that level, and they must fear Allah the Exalted in themselves and follow the path of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the remembrance of Allah the Exalted, not exceeding what the Shari'ah has brought, so that they may be among the followers of the one who brought the Shari'ah.
