Is it permissible to change the intention of the prayer from shortening to completing it after entering the prayer, if one is uncertain about his proximity to the city in which he resides?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh : Peace be upon you.

The questioner : Is it permissible to change the intention? Is it permissible to change the intention while traveling? Is it permissible to change the intention of the prayer from shortening to completing it if one is traveling and is uncertain about his proximity to the city in which he resides?

The Shaykh : Changing the intention from shortening to completing?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : May Allah reward you. The original ruling for the prayer of travel is shortening. Therefore, it does not require an intention. That is, if you enter the four-unit prayer while you are a traveler, even if you did not intend to shorten it, you have shortened it, because the original ruling for the prayer of travel is shortening.
As established in al-Bukhari and others, that
The first thing for which the prayer was made obligatory was two units, so the prayer of travel was left as it was, and the prayer of residence was increased. أول ما فرضت الصلاة ركعتين فأقرت صلاة السفر وزيد في صلاة الحضر
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 2:5
.
Therefore, the stronger position is that the prayer of shortening does not require an intention while traveling.
We will end the session here, because the question is about the prayer of shortening, and shortening is shortening. This will be the last meeting before Hajj, and after Hajj, if Allah wills, there will be a meeting every week, every Thursday.
We ask Allah to gather us and you in His obedience, and to grant us from Him mercy, beneficial knowledge, and righteous deeds. And may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
