The Intention When Intending to Shorten the Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 6800 )
Q3: Is it obligatory to form the intention to shorten the prayer during the journey or before it? And if I travel and do not form the intention, and I want to pray, do I shorten it or not?
A3: Forming the intention to shorten the prayer is done before performing it, not at the start of the journey, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Actions are only by intentionsإنما الأعمال بالنيات
. So if you travel and do not form the intention to shorten at the start of the journey, you may shorten the four-rak'ah prayer, provided that it is a journey in which the prayer is shortened, which is a distance of approximately eighty kilometers. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
