What is the ruling on one who intends to fast a voluntary fast during the day?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Now, if a person intends to fast from the Dhuhr prayer throughout the day and does not eat, and then Dhuhr comes, is his fast recorded as a full day, or only from the Dhuhr prayer?

The Shaykh : That is, if he intends to fast during the day, and it is a voluntary fast.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes, provided he did not do anything before that which contradicts fasting, such as eating or drinking, then his fast is valid, whether before the sun reaches its zenith or after. But is he rewarded from the beginning of the day, or from the time of his intention? The correct view is that he is rewarded only from the time of his intention, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. إنما الأعمال بالنيات وإنما لكل امرئ ما نوى
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
The benefit is that the reward of fasting is recorded for him from the time he intended until the setting of the sun. Yes.
