A man finds a lost item while on his way to Makkah on the road of the great wadi; what should he do with it? And if it is of little value, like fifty riyals, may he take it?

The questioner : Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and Allah's mercy and blessings.

The questioner : The honorable Shaykh, a question is asked about a person who found a lost item in Makkah while entering Makkah at the beginning of the road of the great wadi, and he was inside Makkah. What is your opinion? Should he leave it in its place, or take it with him and return to al-Qasim, for example, if he is from there?

The Shaykh : Did he find it in the Haram, or before entering the Haram?

The questioner : Before entering the Haram.

The Shaykh : This is like any other lost item. If he takes it, provided he is safe from losing it himself and knows that he will announce it, then let him take it, for that is better. But if he fears that he will not be able to announce it, or that he is not safe from losing it himself, then it is not permissible for him to take it; he should leave it.

The questioner : And if it is, for example, a small need or its value is little?

The Shaykh : Small items like
1010
riyals,
2020
riyals, he takes them and they are his.

The questioner :
5050
riyals.

The Shaykh :
5050
riyals, according to the custom of people, do they care about it? The middle class of people?
It appears that it is not cared for, and the thing that is not cared for and it is not thought that its owner will return to search for it, he owns it by merely picking it up.
