A person wiped over a sock and wanted to wear another; should he wipe over both? And if he wipes over both and then removes the second, should he wipe?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
May peace and mercy of Allah be upon you, O honorable Shaykh.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah.

The questioner : If a person performs wudu' and then wears a sock, and after wiping over it he needs another sock and wears it, does he wipe over the second sock? And likewise the reverse: if he has socks or two socks on top of each other, and he needs to remove one of them, how is the ruling on wiping established?

The Shaykh : As for the first issue: if he needs to wear an additional layer and wears the additional layer while in a state of purity, there is no harm, and he wipes over it. However, the duration is calculated from the wiping of the first one. For example, if a day has passed and a night remains for a resident, and he wears the second one over the first while in a state of purity, he does not wipe over the second one except for the remainder of the night only.
As for the reverse: if he wipes over the upper one and then wants to lighten his load and removes it, he does not perform wudu' until he removes the second one, because he removed the one that was wiped over, and if the one that was wiped over is removed, the wiping is invalidated.

The questioner : And if he is wearing it!

The Shaykh : The question will come to you, if Allah wills; the answer is clear, is it not?

The Shaykh : Okay, there is no harm. If a person performs wudu' and wipes over a sock, and then needs an additional layer, and wears the second sock while in a state of purity after having wiped over the first one while he was pure, there is no harm in wearing the second one. But he wipes over it for the remainder of the duration; he does not start anew. And the example, as I said: a person, for example, wears socks at Fajr and wipes over them for Zuhr, 'Asr, and Maghrib, wiping over them. Then he wears the second sock. Does he start a new day and night, or does he complete the previous day and night?
He completes the previous day and night.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : The question now will have its answer clarified, if Allah wills: so now he wipes for what remains of the duration, even if it is only one time.
The reverse: if he was wearing two, and when half a day had passed, he removed the one he was wiping over, then here he must perform wudu' for prayer without a khuff, meaning: without a sock. He removes the sock. The difference between them is that if the one that was wiped over is removed, the wiping is invalidated.
