(Jabir’s hadith regarding the Farewell Sermon) And indeed, our Prophet pointed in his sermon *** toward the sky with his finger and his fingers, citing the Lord of the highest heavens *** so that they might see and hear His words

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then he said:
"And indeed, our Prophet pointed in his sermon *** toward the sky with his finger and his fingers
citing the Lord of the highest heavens *** so that they might see and hear His words, the two weighty groups
Did he perhaps take the sky as a witness? *** Or did he take as a witness the One who is above the possessor of the worlds"

The author (may Allah have mercy on him) refers with these verses to what is established in the authentic collection *Sahih Muslim* from the hadith of Jabir, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to the people on the Day of 'Arafah and said to them:
"Have I conveyed it?" They said, "Yes." He said, "O Allah, be a witness," raising his finger to the sky and pointing it for the people هل بلغت ؟ قالوا : نعم قال : اللهم اشهد يرفعُ أَصبُعه إلى السماء وينكُتها للناس
So, did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) take the sky as a witness, or did he take as a witness the One above the sky? The latter, without a doubt. And for this reason he said:
O Allah, be witness اللهم اشهد
And he did not say, "O sky, be a witness," but rather he said:
O Allah, be witness اللهم اشهد
This is something known, known to all the Companions who heard the sermon of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
