Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He said:
"He was the most knowledgeable of His creation regarding His speech*** (peace and blessings be upon him) Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) in every season"
Amen. Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the most knowledgeable of the creation regarding the speech of Allah; there is no doubt in this.
"He interprets the Qur'an in his bowing*** and his prostration with an interpretation possessing proof"
For he (peace and blessings be upon him), when the saying of Allah the Exalted was revealed:
(1) When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest, (2) And you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes, (3) Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance. إذا جاء نصر الله والفتح * ورأيتَ الناس يدخلون في دين الله أفواجا * فسبح بحمد ربك واستغفره * إنه كان توابا
[An-Nasr 110:1-3]
, he (peace and blessings be upon him) knew that this was the nearness of his term and that Allah had commanded him to conclude his life with this supplication: "Glorify the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness." So he used to frequently say in his bowing and prostration: "Subhanaka Allahumma Rabbana wa bihamdika, Allahumma ighfir li" (Glorified are You, O our Lord, and with Your praise, O Allah, forgive me). Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
"He interprets the Qur'an in his bowing*** and his prostration with an interpretation possessing proof" meaning possessing knowledge and evidence.
"This is what the Mother of the Believers*** said, narrating it from him with her tongue"
What did she say? When she said:
The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) often said while bowing and prostrating himself; “Glory be to Thee, O Allah, out Lord.” And “Praise be to كان يُكثر أن يقول في ركوعه وسجوده سبحانك اللهم ربنا وبحمدك
Sunan Abi Dawud 877Sahih (Al-Albani)
she said:
He interprets the Qur'an. يتأول القرآن
What does she mean by it? What does she mean by ta'wil (figurative interpretation) here? Does she mean that he diverts the Qur'an from its apparent meaning to a meaning that contradicts the apparent? No, he interprets the Qur'an by acting upon it, because the reality of the commanded thing and its outcome is acting upon it. For example, if Allah commands something, we have two interpretations of it:
The first interpretation is its explanation (tafsir), and the second interpretation is its deed and acting upon it. So Aisha's (may Allah be pleased with her) saying:
He interprets the Qur'an. يتأول القرآن
does not mean that he explains it, explaining the meaning of "Glorify the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness," but the meaning is that he acts upon it. And acting upon the commanded thing is considered ta'wil (figurative interpretation) because it is the manifestation of the commanded thing so that it becomes witnessed, just as the ta'wil (figurative interpretation) of a report, when it occurs, is called ta'wil (figurative interpretation) because it is the manifestation of the reported thing or the thing about which the report is made, so that it is witnessed and seen.
So the result, my brothers, is that ta'wil (figurative interpretation) is intended to mean explanation (tafsir), and it is intended to mean the very thing interpreted. If it is something commanded, its ta'wil (figurative interpretation) is doing the commanded thing. If it is something reported, its ta'wil (figurative interpretation) is the occurrence of the reported thing so that it is witnessed and seen. Good.
