But they came with a prescribed waiting period *** in which there is mourning and the obligation to stay in the home (Explanation of what is required of the woman in the waiting period of mourning)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :"But they came with a prescribed waiting period ***" After his death, they observed the waiting period for his death for four months and ten days.
"*** in which there is mourning and the obligation to stay in the home" This means staying in the house, because the woman in the waiting period of mourning must do several things:
First: She must not leave her house except out of dire necessity, such as if the house is cracking and there is a fear it will collapse on her, or if a fire breaks out in it, or if rains come that are feared to cause it to collapse on her, or something similar. The key is dire necessity.
Second: She must not wear beautiful clothes. She must not wear beautiful clothes that would be described as adorned. She is not required to stick to a single color, as the common people think that she must wear a green garment or a black garment. What is forbidden is not wearing a garment that is considered adornment.
Third: She must not wear jewelry of any kind, whether on the hand, the foot, the ear, the head, or the neck, on any part of her body.
Fourth: She must not use perfume of any kind, neither incense nor oil, except that the Lawgiver granted her a dispensation for a piece of agarwood, such as the well-known agarwood. This is if she has purified herself from menstruation, to remove the odor that occurs due to menstruation, because this is a pressing need.
Fifth: She must not adorn her face, her hands, or any part of her body. She must not apply kohl, must not redden her lips, must not use chalk, and must not use henna. These are five things.
As for what the common people claim, saying that she must not face the moon when it is full, this is not correct. Their evidence for this is that they say the moon is a male, and it is not permissible to uncover oneself before men. As for the sun, it is
The student: A female.

The Shaykh : female, and therefore it is permissible for her to appear in the daytime before the sun. The common people also say that it is not permissible for her to go up to the roof or go out to the courtyard. All of this has no basis. They also say it is not permissible for her to speak to anyone, which also has no basis. The key is that mourning is known by the five things we mentioned. He said, may Allah have mercy on him, yes, yes.
