How does one seek nearness to Allah through His names?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : As for the attributes, is it permissible to supplicate with them?

The Shaykh : Yes, I do.

The questioner : Many people supplicate in a manner that contradicts what the attribute entails?

The Shaykh : No, the best is to supplicate in a way that aligns with the attribute being invoked. For example, is it appropriate to say, "O Severe in Retribution, forgive me"? It is not fitting. If we were to consider this as a form of mocking Allah, it would be closer to the truth. How can you seek nearness to Allah the Exalted through the severity of His punishment rather than through His forgiveness?
