The questioner : What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding the marriage of one who has repented from sins? And is there a word on this topic?
The Shaykh : What is the ruling of the Shari'ah?
The questioner : In your view, regarding the marriage of the one who has repented.
The Shaykh : Yes.
The questioner : From sins? And is there a word?
The Shaykh : Yes. We say that if a person repents to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) from his sin, no matter how great it is, then Allah the Exalted will accept his repentance, due to the generality of His saying:[Az-Zumar 39:53-55] the verses.
And the marriage of the one who has repented, which is what the question was about, there is nothing wrong with the marriage of the one who has repented.
The questioner : Very well.
The Shaykh : Rather, one may encourage the marriage of the one who has repented to reconcile him and to firm up his repentance. The one who repents from a sin is like one who has no sin. However, it is not befitting for us to rush when we see that this suitor has repented from disobedience, until we look into and investigate his condition and know that his repentance is sincere and that it is pure for Allah. This is because some people propose to several people, and if they see that they have not been accepted, and they see in themselves a neglect of an obligation or a violation of a forbidden thing, they go and feign repentance, perform the obligation, and leave the forbidden thing. But when they are married, they return to that. So I say: if a man who was known for being immersed in sins repents, then Allah will accept his repentance, there is no doubt in this, if the conditions of repentance that we mentioned at the beginning of this meeting are met. But it is befitting for us to wait, to investigate him, and to follow up on his conditions. Sincerity is clear, and deception is clear. So if his sincerity becomes clear to us, then we marry him, and there is nothing wrong with that. Yes.

(53) Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful." (54) And return [in repentance] to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you; then you will not be helped. (55) And follow the best of what was revealed to you from your Lord before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you do not perceive,
