The questioner : Is it permissible for a divorced woman to greet and converse with her ex-husband, given that...

The Shaykh : with?

The questioner : with her ex-husband, given that they have children between them? I ask the honorable Shaykh for a rewardable answer.

The Shaykh : If a divorced woman’s divorce was less than three, without compensation, and she has children from her husband, or if she has no children but he has had intercourse with her, then she is in the state of revocable divorce.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : She is in the ruling of wives, except for what is excluded. Accordingly, it is permissible for her to speak to the one who divorced her, to converse with him, to adorn herself for him, to uncover herself before him, for him to be alone with her, and for him to travel with her, as she is in the ruling of wives.
This is the woman in revocable divorce whom he can take back during the waiting period.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As for when she is not in a state of revocable divorce—because this divorce is the third of three, or the divorce was with compensation, or the separation was by annulment for one of the reasons—then she is not in the ruling of wives. However, her husband may speak to her and converse with her without fear of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation).
In summary: Divorced women, or more accurately, women in the waiting period from their husbands, if their husbands have the right to take them back, are in the ruling of wives in everything except for what is excluded, which are few matters.
And if she is not in a state of revocable divorce—that is, the one whom he cannot take back except by a new contract, or who is not lawful to him except after another husband—then she is considered finally divorced from him. If she is finally divorced, she is not in the ruling of wives, but he may speak to her. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you. This questioner is from the Emirates.
