The reciter: Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us, saying: Malik informed us from Sami, the freed slave of Abu Bakr, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Muwatta Malik 3:3.
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. He said: The chapter on drawing lots for the adhan. Drawing lots means a lottery, and that is when they dispute over it and there is no regular mu'adhdhin. As for when there is a regular mu'adhdhin, it is he who calls. But at the beginning, if they dispute over it, and the neighbors do not choose one of them, then they draw lots. This is not the purpose of this chapter; the purpose is to encourage the adhan. For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Muwatta Malik 3:3. In this hadith is evidence of the virtue of the adhan and that it is worthy of people drawing lots for it, as to who will call. In it is also evidence of the weakness of the ambition of those people who, when the time for prayer arrives, each one of them stands and says to the other, "Call, you call," and you find them pushing the adhan away from each other, not drawing lots for it. This is undoubtedly a deprivation, and it is befitting for a person to be the first to the adhan among his people. Among its benefits is also the virtue of the first row, and that if people found no way to obtain it except by drawing lots, they would draw lots for it, due to its virtue. In it is also the virtue of hastening to the prayer, the night prayer, and the dawn prayer. Hastening means the Zuhr prayer that is prayed at the height of the day. As for the night prayer, it is the 'Isha' prayer, and the dawn prayer is well known. The meaning is that if they knew what reward and recompense is in them, and what punishment is in leaving them, they would come to them even if they had to crawl on their knees. In it is an encouragement to attend the 'Isha' prayer, the dawn prayer, and the Zuhr prayer.

If people knew what was in the adhan and the first row of the prayer and could only draw lots for it, they would draw lots. And if they knew what was in doing dhuhr early, they would race each other to it. And if they knew what was in isha and subh, they would go to them even if they had to crawl.
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
