The reciter: Abdullah ibn Abd al-Wahhab narrated to us, saying: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Hamid, the owner of the Ziyadi, narrated to us, saying: I heard Abdullah ibn al-Harith say: Ibn Abbas delivered a sermon to us on a day of heavy rain. He instructed the mu'adhdhin that when he reached "Hayya 'ala al-salah" (Come to prayer), he should say, "Pray in your homes." Some of them looked at one another, and it seemed as if they disapproved. He said, "It seems you have disapproved of this. Indeed, this is the practice of one who is better than me, meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is the default ruling, and I disliked to put you in a difficult position." And from Hammad, from Asim, from Abdullah ibn al-Harith, from Ibn Abbas, to the same effect, except that he said, "I disliked to make you sinful, so that you would come trampling in the mud up to your knees."
