The prayer was established, and I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrating in water and mud, until I saw the mark of the mud on his forehead.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) first entered i'tikaf in Ramadan in the first ten days, then he entered i'tikaf in the middle ten days seeking the Night of Decree. Then it was told to him that it was in the last ten days. He saw it in a dream, so he addressed the people and said: That is, on water and mud. So the sky rained on the night of the twenty-first.
