The reciter: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, Ya'qub ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abd al-Qari al-Qurashi al-Iskandari narrated to us, Abu Hazim ibn Dinar narrated to us: that a group of men came to Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi while they were in doubt about what wood the pulpit was made of? So they asked him about it, and he said:
By Allah, I know what it is made of, and I saw it on the first day it was placed, and the first day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for a certain woman, whom Sahl named, and said: "Tell your carpenter slave to make me some wooden planks to sit on when I address the people." So she ordered him, and he made them from the tamarisk of the forest. Then she brought them, and she sent for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he ordered them to be placed here. Then I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pray on it, and he said the takbir while on it, then he bowed while on it, then he descended backward and prostrated at the base of the pulpit. Then he returned, and when he finished, he turned to the people and said: "O people, I only did this so that you may follow me and so that you may learn my prayer."
