Benefits of the hadith that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform the witr prayer on his mount.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In this is evidence for what al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) titled his chapter: that the witr prayer is permissible on a mount. But in which direction should one face? One should face the direction in which one is facing, and it is not obligatory for one to face the Ka'bah; rather, one faces the direction in which one is facing. And this is only for voluntary prayers.
It is also evidence that the witr prayer is not obligatory, as is the stronger opinion that it is not obligatory, neither for those who are resident nor for those who are traveling, nor for one who has a regular night prayer, nor for one who does not have a regular night prayer. It is among the recommended practices, but it is among the emphasized recommended practices.
In it is evidence that it is recommended for a scholar to check on his companions and see what they have done, as 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did, and as our Imam Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), used to do. He missed Abu Hurayrah and was walking with him in the markets of Madinah when he said to him:
Where were you? أين كنت ؟
He said: "I was in a state of major ritual impurity, so I performed the full ritual bath". So the important point is that it is recommended for a person who has a status and standing among his people to check on them, because this is the way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
In it is evidence for the permissibility of taking an oath without being asked to swear, based on Sa'id's saying, "Yes, by Allah," when 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar said to him: "Is there not in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a good example for you?"
If it is asked, "What is the good example?" we say that the good example is following him in what he did and in what he left. Here, the good example is that a person performs the witr prayer on what? On his camel, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do. Yes.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Wait, wait.

The questioner : If a person prays the obligatory prayer on a train or an airplane and faces the qiblah, meaning he does not have...

The Shaykh : It will come to us in the next chapter, if Allah wills.
The reader: The chapter on witr in travel.
Musa ibn Isma'il narrated to us, Juwayriyyah ibn Asma' narrated to us, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, who said:
on a journey God’s Messenger would pray on his riding beast in whatever direction it turned, making a sign with his head* in prayer during the night, but not in the obligatory prayers; and he would observe a witr on his riding beast. كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي في السفر على راحلته حيث توجهت به، يومئ إيماءً صلاة الليل إلا الفرائض، ويوتر على راحلته
Mishkat al-Masabih 1340
.

The Shaykh : This is a sound answer, except for the obligatory prayers. And his saying:
He used to pray facing the direction in which he was facing. كان يصلي حيث توجهت به
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2:892
indicates that he prays the prayer from its beginning to its end, so that even in the opening takbir, he is facing the direction in which he is facing.
