The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on encouraging the witr prayer and explaining that it is a confirmed recommended practice and explaining its time:
"From Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Perform Witr before the morning comes upon you.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 468Sahih (Darussalam)
Narrated by Muslim.
And from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her):
the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to offer prayer at night while she lay in front of him, and when the Witr prayer was yet to be observed, he would awaken her and she observed Witr.
Sahih Muslim 744b
Narrated by Muslim.
And in a narration from him:
and when he observed Witr, he said to me: O 'A'isha, get up and observe Witr.
Sahih Muslim 744a
.
And from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Hasten to perform the witr before the dawn.
Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: It is a good and authentic hadith.
And from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If anyone is afraid that he may not get up in the latter part of the night, he should observe Witr in the first part of it; and if anyone is eager to get up in the last part of it, he should observe Witr at the end of the night, for prayer at the end of the night is witnessed (by the angels) and that is preferable.
Sahih Muslim 755a
Narrated by Muslim"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These hadiths regarding the remaining matters related to the witr were mentioned by the author in *Riyad al-Salihin*: Among them is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Perform Witr before the morning comes upon you.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 468Sahih (Darussalam)
, because the time for the witr ends with the appearance of the dawn. So when the dawn appears, there is no witr, even if it is between the adhan for Fajr and the iqamah, there is no witr. But if the dawn appears and a person has not performed the witr, he prays an even number of rak'ahs during the day: if he usually performs the witr with three, he prays four; if he performs it with five, he prays six; if he performs it with seven, he prays eight. This is based on the statement of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her):
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to pray twelve rak'ahs during the day when sleep or pain overcame him.
.
And know that the witr has characteristics:
The first characteristic: That one performs the witr with only one rak'ah, and this is permissible, and it is not disliked to perform the witr with it.
The second: That one performs the witr with three, and he has the choice: if he wishes, he says the taslim after two rak'ahs and then performs the third, and if he wishes, he performs them consecutively with one tashahhud.
The third: That one performs the witr with five, performing them consecutively without reciting the tashahhud except at the end.
The fourth: That one performs the witr with seven, performing them consecutively without reciting the tashahhud except at the end.
The fifth: That one performs the witr with nine, performing them consecutively, but he recites the tashahhud after the eighth and does not say the taslim, then he prays the ninth and says the taslim.
The sixth: That one performs the witr with eleven, saying the taslim after every two rak'ahs and performing the witr with one.
These are the characteristics of the witr. It has been mentioned previously that it is a confirmed recommended practice, and that some scholars have made it obligatory, so do not neglect the witr.
Then, if you hope that you will wake up in the last part of the night, make the witr in the last part of the night. And if you fear that you will not get up, make the witr in the first part of the night. Do not sleep without having performed the witr. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) advised Abu Hurayrah to perform the witr before he sleeps, because Abu Hurayrah used to recite the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in the first part of the night and sleep in the last part, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) ordered him to perform the witr before he sleeps.
And know that the witr is a recommended practice in residence and in travel, so do not leave it even in travel. Among the occasions is the night of Muzdalifah: when a person prays 'Isha, he prays Maghrib and 'Isha combined, then he performs the witr. Even though Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) did not mention it in his hadith, the principle is that what was established remains as it was, and that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not leave the witr, whether in residence or in travel. And success is from Allah.
