Benefits of the Hadith: (… so he came to Ibn Abbas and asked him about the witr of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Ibn Abbas said…)

The Shaykh : In this, too, in this passage, there is evidence that it is incumbent upon a person, when asked about something and there is someone in the place who is more knowledgeable about it than he is, to refer the question to that person. This was the custom of the Salaf (may Allah have mercy on them); when a person was asked, he would not rush to answer but would refer the matter to one who was more knowledgeable. There is no doubt that this is part of completing sincere advice to Allah, His Book, His Messenger, the leaders of the Muslims, and their common people. If you compare this methodology with the methodology of some people today, you will know the great difference. Some people today rush to issue fatwas, and you find that they have not grasped but a little of the knowledge, yet they appoint themselves to issue fatwas for the Muslims. It is well known that the one seeking a fatwa will believe that what was ruled is the religion of Allah, so this man who rushed without verifying would have said about Allah what he does not know and led the servants of Allah astray.
Among the benefits of this hadith is the praise of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) for her knowledge, where Ibn Abbas described her as the one most knowledgeable on earth regarding the witr of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
Among the benefits of this hadith is the fact that knowledge is vast; a person may be the most knowledgeable of people in one issue, yet ignorant in another. This is because he said: "The most knowledgeable of people regarding the witr of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his family". This is the reality. You will find that some people grasp the science of inheritance with great strength, but are weak in other issues of Islamic jurisprudence. Or they grasp knowledge in acts of worship but are weak in transactions. Or they are strong in transactions but weak in acts of worship. This is because a person is limited and cannot comprehend all sciences, unless it is from the category of karamah (a miracle granted to a righteous person), where Allah may bestow upon some of His servants the ability to comprehend much of the sciences.
Among the benefits of this hadith is that a person should accompany one whom he sees as closer to his taking action, meaning one whom he sees as closer to his action in order to encourage him and be a helper to him. If, for example, you want to address a king or a great man of the people and you are shy to go to him alone, or you fear that he will not raise his head for you, and you accompany someone, there is no harm in this. It is not said that this man sought help from other than Allah, because we say that seeking help from other than Allah in what the helper is capable of is permissible, as indicated by the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
