Mentioning the conditions of repentance.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : However, repentance must have certain conditions. We summarize them as follows:
The first is sincerity for the sake of Allah. The second is regret for the sin committed. The third is abandoning it. The fourth is resolving not to return to it. The fifth is that the repentance occurs before the door of repentance is closed. I repeat: sincerity, regret for what was done, abandoning the sin, resolving not to return, and that the repentance is before the door of repentance is closed. Five conditions. So, if one repents to show off to people, his repentance is not accepted. Allah the Mighty and Majestic said in the Qudsi Hadith:
I am the One, One Who does not stand in need of a partner. If anyone does anything in which he associates anyone else with Me, I shall abandon him with one whom he associates with Allah. أنا أغنى الشركاء عن الشرك من عمل عملا أشرك فيه معي غيري تركته وشركه
Sahih Muslim 2985
. And if one repents in order to gain something of this world, his repentance is not accepted, due to the lack of what? Due to the lack of sincerity. The second is regret, and regret is a psychological state that may not appear in one's actions, but its place is the heart. You find him lamenting in his heart for what happened, and he regrets it.
The third is abandoning the sin. As for the one who repents while still determined to commit the sin, his repentance is not accepted. Rather, he is mocking Allah the Mighty and Majestic. A person says he has repented from backbiting. Backbiting is mentioning one's brother with what he dislikes. But whenever he gets an opportunity, he backbites people. Is his repentance accepted? No, because he did not abandon it; he did not abandon it. A person says, "Usury is forbidden. I seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him from usury." Come, my son, come, we will give you this hundred for one hundred and twenty. A hundred for one hundred and twenty. Is this usury or not? It is usury. Is this man's repentance valid? No. It is not valid because he did not abandon the sin. A person usurped a piece of land from someone and took possession of it by force, and said, "I repent to Allah from the injustices done to people." But he is determined to keep this land. Is his repentance valid? No, it is not valid, it is not valid because he did not, did not abandon it.
The fourth is resolving not to return, meaning he resolves in his heart that he will not return to committing the sin. He will not return to committing the sin. He does not say, "I have repented, I regret, and I have abandoned it," but in his conscience, he intends to return to the sin. In that case, his repentance is not accepted. Good.
The fifth—and it is the most important of them—is that the repentance must be before the door of repentance is closed. If it is after the door of repentance is closed, it is of no benefit. The closing of the door of repentance occurs through two things: a general matter and a specific matter.
The specific matter is the arrival of the term of death. If a person faces death and repents, his repentance is not accepted. Glory be to Allah! His repentance is not accepted? The evidence, listen to the evidence, both a report and a reality. Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:
But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "Indeed, I have repented now," وليس التوبة للذين يعملون السيئات حتى إذا حضر أحدهم الموت قال إني تبت الآن
[An-Nisa 4:18]
This is one for whom there is no repentance. Why? Because he did not repent except when he witnessed the Hereafter. So his repentance is not accepted. As for the reality, listen also to what Allah the Exalted did to Pharaoh and his people. When drowning overtook Pharaoh, what did he say?
I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims." آمنت بالذي آمنت به بنو إسرائيل وأنا من المسلمين
[Yunus 10:90]
. So it was said to him:
Do you believe now? آالآن
meaning, "Do you believe now? When drowning overtook you, and you had disobeyed before, and you were of the corrupters."
And you had disobeyed [Him] before and were of the corrupters? وقد عصيت قبل وكنت من المفسدين
[Yunus 10:91]
. That is, there is no repentance for you. Clear, everyone? Good. This condition: does any one of us guarantee that he will repent before his term of death arrives? Why? Because death may come suddenly. How many people have died with a pen in their hand, writing! How many people have died while driving a car! How many people have died in their beds! Is that not so? This is the reality. If you do not know when you will die, it means you must hasten to repent immediately, because you do not know. For this reason, I advise my brothers who have injustices against people, or injustices between them and Allah, to repent to Allah before it is too late. As long as a person is alive, he is able to do everything, but when he dies, he is not able to.
