Seeking Nearness to Allah the Exalted by a Specific Name

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The second is seeking nearness to Allah the Exalted by a specific name. Seeking nearness to Allah by a specific name is prescribed, and this name should be appropriate to what is being sought. The name by which you seek nearness should be suitable for the request. If you want to ask Allah for forgiveness, by which name do you seek nearness? By which one? By al-Ghafur (the All-Forgiving). You say, "O Allah, O All-Forgiving, forgive me. O All-Forgiving, forgive me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught the man he loved most, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), a supplication to recite in his prayer. He said, "Say:
Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathiran wala yaghfirudhdhunuba illa anta, Faghfirli maghfiratan min indika war-hamni, innaka antalGhafur-Rahim. اللهم إني ظلمت نفسي ظلما كثيرا ولا يغفر الذنوب إلا أنت فاغفر لي مغفرة من عندك وارحمني إنك أنت الغفور الرحيم
Sahih al-Bukhari 6326
" He said, "Forgive me and have mercy on me." Then he sought nearness by the name and said, "Go, O man."
The student: ... .

The Shaykh :
No doubt, You are the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. إنك أنت الغفور الرحيم
Sahih al-Bukhari 7387, 7388
This falls under the generality of the statement of Allah the Exalted:
And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them ولله الأسماء الحسنى فادعوه بها
[Al-A'raf 7:180]
