Discussion of Surat al-Fatihah, an explanation of its virtue, the number of its verses, and whether the Basmala is one of its verses

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The student :
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds -
[Al-Fatihah 1:2]
.

The Shaykh : This is one point.
The student:
The Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
.

The Shaykh : Two.
The student:
Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.
[Al-Fatihah 1:4]
.

The Shaykh : Three.
The student:
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
[Al-Fatihah 1:5]
.

The Shaykh : Four.
The student:
Guide us to the straight path -
[Al-Fatihah 1:6]
.

The Shaykh : Five.
The student:
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor
[Al-Fatihah 1:7]
.

The Shaykh : Six.
The student:
not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
[Al-Fatihah 1:7]
.

The Shaykh : Seven, correct?
Now, we mentioned the hadith: "The prayer was divided between Me and My servant into two halves, and it began with praise." So the first verses of al-Fatihah are
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds -
[Al-Fatihah 1:2]
, and as the brother counted them,
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds -
[Al-Fatihah 1:2]
is the first,
The Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
the second,
Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.
[Al-Fatihah 1:4]
the third,
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
[Al-Fatihah 1:5]
the fourth,
Guide us to the straight path -
[Al-Fatihah 1:6]
the fifth,
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor
[Al-Fatihah 1:7]
the sixth, and
not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
[Al-Fatihah 1:7]
the seventh.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Well done.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Yes, well done. These are seven verses. Some scholars said that the first verse is "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate." Based on this opinion, "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate" is the first,
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds -
[Al-Fatihah 1:2]
the second,
The Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
the third,
Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.
[Al-Fatihah 1:4]
the fourth,
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
[Al-Fatihah 1:5]
the fifth,
Guide us to the straight path -
[Al-Fatihah 1:6]
the sixth, and
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
[Al-Fatihah 1:7]
the seventh. Yes, but the stronger position is the first opinion, that the beginning of al-Fatihah is
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds -
[Al-Fatihah 1:2]
. This is why the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not recite the Basmala aloud in the prayers where recitation is loud, as reported in Sahih Muslim. If the Basmala were part of it, it would have the ruling of al-Fatihah, and he would have recited it aloud. Also, from the numerical perspective, if al-Fatihah is divided into two halves between Allah and the human, which verse is the half between Allah and the servant? If "You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help" is to be the half of al-Fatihah, it must be preceded by three verses and followed by three verses. This is only possible if we count the first verse as
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds -
[Al-Fatihah 1:2]
. Also, if we say that
Guide us to the straight path -
[Al-Fatihah 1:6]
is the sixth,
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
[Al-Fatihah 1:7]
becomes a long verse compared to the verses before it. But if we divide it and say that
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor
[Al-Fatihah 1:7]
, the verses are equal or close in length.
Now, in any case, this great surah is the Seven Repeated Verses, as Allah the Exalted said:
And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur'an.
[Al-Hijr 15:87]
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is al-Fatihah.
And it is the greatest surah in the Book of Allah.
