The questioner : Some people say that the verses of Surat al-Fatihah do not complete seven unless the Basmalah is included, considering the Basmalah to be the first verse of the surah, citing His saying, the Exalted: [Al-Hijr 15:87]?
The Shaykh : Yes, and some people say that al-Fatihah completes seven verses without the Basmalah, and this second opinion is the correct one. The evidence for this is:, and if the Basmalah were part of al-Fatihah, it would be recited aloud like the rest of its verses. Another piece of evidence is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that Allah, the Exalted, said: , so He began with the praise.
As for it being seven verses, let this questioner listen:[Al-Fatihah 1:2] is the first, is the second, [Al-Fatihah 1:4] is the third, [Al-Fatihah 1:5] is the fourth, is the fifth, [Al-Fatihah 1:7] is the sixth, and [Al-Fatihah 1:7] is the seventh.
This is undoubtedly the closest view so that the verses are proportional in length, for if you make:[Al-Fatihah 1:7] one verse, the length of the remaining verses becomes twice as long.
Also, al-Fatihah is between Allah and the servant; three of its verses are the right of Allah, three are the right of the human being, and one is between them:[Al-Fatihah 1:2-4], all of which is the right of Allah.
[Al-Fatihah 1:6-7] is the right of the human being.
[Al-Fatihah 1:5] is between them, and it is the fourth verse, which is between the three and the three, so the proportion is clear. Therefore, if a person recites al-Fatihah without the Basmalah, his prayer is valid, because he recited al-Fatihah with its seven verses.
And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur'an.
ولقد آتيناك سبعاً من المثاني والقرآن العظيمThe Shaykh : Yes, and some people say that al-Fatihah completes seven verses without the Basmalah, and this second opinion is the correct one. The evidence for this is:
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not recite the Basmalah aloud in the loud prayers, but he recited "All praise is to Allah, Lord of the worlds" aloud...
أن النبي صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم كان لا يجهر بالبسملة في الصلاة الجهرية ويجهر بالحمد لله رب العالمين ...I have divided the prayer between Me and My servant in two halves. When he says "All praise is to Allah, Lord of the worlds," He says, "My servant praised Me." When he says "The Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy," He says, "My servant praised Me." When he says "Master of the Day of Judgment," He says, "My servant glorified Me." When he says "You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help," He says, "This is between Me and My servant, and for My servant is what he asks." When he says "Guide us to the straight path," Allah says, "This is for My servant, and for My servant is what he asks."
As for it being seven verses, let this questioner listen:
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds -
الحمد لله رب العالمينThe Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

مالك يوم الدينIt is You we worship and You we ask for help.
