The Story of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) Prayer for Rain and the Prayer for Rain of ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And we have in the noble Companions a good example. A drought struck the people during the time of the Rightly Guided Caliph ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). A severe drought struck the people, and what does drought mean? It means the withholding of rain, the cessation of rain. So he went out with the people to pray for rain and said:
O Allah! We used to ask our Prophet to invoke You for rain, and You would bless us with rain, and now we ask his uncle to invoke You for rain. O Allah ! Bless us with rain.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1010
. Who is the Prophet’s uncle? Al-‘Abbas ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib. So al-‘Abbas stood up and supplicated to Allah. Did ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and the Companions come to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to seek rain through him? No, they never came to seek rain through him. The Companions sought rain through the Messenger, meaning through his supplication, during his lifetime. As for after his death, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) does not have the power to supplicate for them. He does not have the power to say, “O Allah, send rain to my Ummah.” Why? Because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) himself said:
When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious child, who prays for him (for the deceased).
Sahih Muslim 1631
. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) does not have the power in his grave to supplicate for his Ummah, because his deeds have been cut off, and supplication is an act of worship, indeed one of the best of deeds. So the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were more knowledgeable than us in the religion of Allah and more aware of what benefits the servants of Allah, and yet they never came to the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to seek rain through the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Rather, they sought rain through him during his lifetime, through his supplication, through his supplication. And we have not heard that any of them said:
O Allah, send us rain through Your Prophet.
. Rather, they would come to him and ask him to supplicate to Allah for them. So in *the two Sahihs* it is narrated from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:
A man entered while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon on Friday.
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 4:106
. Listen to this hadith, listen to this hadith.
Then (that very man) came on the coming Friday through the same door when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was standing and delivering the sermon. He stood in front of him and said: Messenger of Allah, our animals died and the passages blocked.
Sahih Muslim 897a
. The paths are the roads. The sleeping one, get up and perform wudu, perform wudu.
The wealth has perished and the paths have been cut off, so supplicate to Allah to relieve us, supplicate to Allah to relieve us. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands and the people raised their hands, and he said: O Allah, relieve us, three times: O Allah, relieve us, O Allah, relieve us, O Allah, relieve us. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, there was no cloud in the sky, nor a qaz‘ah.
. The clouds are known. A qaz‘ah is a piece of cloud, a piece of cloud.
there were no houses or buildings between us and (the mountain of ) Sal' وما بيننا وبين سلع من بيت ولا دار
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1518Sahih (Darussalam)
. Sulayl is a well-known mountain here in Madinah, and the clouds come from its direction. He said: “We see nothing.”
So a cloud like a shield emerged from behind Sulayl.
. Do you know what a shield is? A shield is something like a metal sheet. Do you know what a metal sheet is? By Allah, we walk around here and you always do too. The metal sheet is what is used for baking. It is placed over the fire and then baked on. You know this, or do you not? Good.
A cloud like a shield emerged and rose in the sky. When it reached the middle of the sky, it spread out, widened, and there was thunder and lightning, and it rained. Anas says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not descend from the pulpit until the rain was dripping from his beard.
. Allahu Akbar. Subhan Allah al-Azim. It is a sign among the signs of Allah, showing the power of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and that when He wills a thing, He says to it “Be,” and it is. And it shows the truthfulness of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), that he is truly the Messenger of Allah.
Because Allah supported him by answering his supplication, so the rain continued to fall from the sky for a full week, a full week, and the sky was pouring its water. When the second Friday came, what happened? When the second Friday came, a man, or the first man, said:
O Messenger of Allah, the buildings have collapsed and the wealth has been drowned.
. The building collapsed because it was made of clay; it collapsed due to the heavy rains. The wealth was drowned, the crops were drowned by the abundance of water, and the livestock were perhaps swept away by the gullies. So supplicate to Allah to hold it back from us. Look at the Bedouin’s question: “Supplicate to Allah to hold it back from us.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands and said:
Narrated Masruq: One day I went to Ibn Mas`ud who said, "When Quraish delayed in embracing Islam, the Prophet (ﷺ) I invoked Allah to curse them, so they were afflicted with a (famine) year because of which many of them died and they ate the carcasses and Abu Sufyan came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, 'O Muhammad! You came to order people to keep good relation with kith and kin and your nation is being destroyed, so invoke Allah I ? So the Prophet (ﷺ) I recited the Holy verses of Sirat-Ad-Dukhan: 'Then watch you For the day that The sky will Bring forth a kind Of smoke Plainly visible.' (44.10) When the famine was taken off, the people renegade once again as nonbelievers. The statement of Allah, (in Sura "Ad- Dukhan"-44) refers to that: 'On the day when We shall seize You with a mighty grasp.' (44.16) And that was what happened on the day of the battle of Badr." Asbath added on the authority of Mansur, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) prayed for them and it rained heavily for seven days. So the people complained of the excessive rain. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'O Allah! (Let it rain) around us and not on us.' So the clouds dispersed over his head and it rained over the surroundings."
Sahih al-Bukhari 1020
. He did not say, “O Allah, hold it back.” Why? Because holding back the rain might involve harm. But the Messenger supplicated with what brings benefit and repels harm. He said:
Narrated Masruq: One day I went to Ibn Mas`ud who said, "When Quraish delayed in embracing Islam, the Prophet (ﷺ) I invoked Allah to curse them, so they were afflicted with a (famine) year because of which many of them died and they ate the carcasses and Abu Sufyan came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, 'O Muhammad! Sahih al-Bukhari 1020
. And he was pointing around us. So whenever the cloud pointed to one direction, it dispersed, dispersing to the other direction, as if the Messenger was commanding it, but he was not commanding it; he was asking Allah:
'O Allah! Round about us and not on us. O Allah!' On the plateaus, on the mountains, on the hills, in the valleys and on the places where trees grow.' " Anas added, "The rain stopped and we came out, walking in the sun." اللهم حوالينا ولا علينا اللهم على الآكام والظراب وبطون الأودية ومنابت الشجر فخرج الناس يمشون في الشمس
Sahih al-Bukhari 1014
. Allahu Akbar. From the time of the Jumu’ah prayer, they went out walking in the sun. So is this seeking rain through the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by his person, or by his supplication? Answer, everyone: by his person, or by his supplication?
The student: By his supplication.

The Shaykh : By his supplication, and after his death he does not supplicate, as we mentioned to you in the hadith.
So seeking nearness to Allah through the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) during his lifetime is through his supplication. As for after his death, we do not seek nearness through his person, but rather through faith in him, love of him, following him, and the like. Good. We mentioned that in this story there is support for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). We mentioned that in it there is support for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Correct? Because Allah, what did He do? He answered his supplication.
