How does one who joins the funeral prayer late perform it?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The questioner says: If a person misses two takbirs in the funeral prayer, what should he do? Does he start with them at the beginning of the prayer, or does he join the imam at the third takbir?

The Shaykh : If the ma'mum misses two takbirs of the funeral prayer and catches up with them at the third, let him make du'a for the deceased, because the most important thing in the prayer for the deceased is making du'a for him. So let him make du'a for the deceased. Then, when the imam says the taslim, if he is able to say the takbir and make up what he missed, he should do so. If he is not able to, he may continue the takbirs and say the taslim, or he may say the taslim with the imam without continuing the takbirs. This is what the jurists said. I do not know of any Sunnah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this, except that we include it in the generality of his saying:
and pray whatever you get (with the people) and complete the rest which you have missed ما أدركتم فصلوا وما فاتكم فأتموا
Sahih al-Bukhari 635
