What is the ruling on wearing a tarboosh and sunglasses?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : O Shaykh, what is the ruling on the tarboosh that has an extra part?

The Shaykh : The tarboosh?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : The one with the brim?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : The one with the brim?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : By Allah, I dislike it. I dislike it for two reasons. The first reason is that it is a recent custom, and I prefer that a Muslim not change from his custom except to a better custom, one that is better and does not contradict the Shari'ah.
The second reason is that this brim affects the eye such that it weakens its ability to resist the rays of the sun. Let the matter remain as it is, and it does no harm. I once stopped a young man who had this brim on at night after 'Isha' prayer. I asked, "What do you want with this cap? Why don't you wear caps like people do?" He said, "Because of the sun." We said, "Now, after 'Isha' prayer, how is it because of the sun?" Look at how blind imitation works. So, I dislike it for these two reasons, and I say: We should be dignified in ourselves, strong in personality, and not turn away from our custom except to what is better than it, on the condition that it does not contradict the Shari'ah. As for us accepting everything that comes, that is a mistake.

The questioner : The glasses, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : The sunglasses.

The Shaykh : Even these, I do not see them as necessary. I do not see sunglasses as necessary except for a person whose eye needs them. Without need, it is a mistake, because later he will not be able to look at the sun without the glasses. Try not to wear sunglasses or any other glasses unless the eye needs them, such that if you leave off the sunglasses, the eye tears up and heats up. In that case, there is no harm due to need.

The questioner : ... the sun hits the eye ...

The Shaykh : Tell them they lied. There are very old sheikhs who look at the crescent moon, but the young man with sunglasses does not see it correctly. However, the eye sees like the body; if you see it is tired from reading or staring at something, stop, just as if you are short of breath, you stop walking. It is one of the organs. Walk with it as you are comfortable. Yes, what?

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Yes, we have reached the end of this session, because the limit between us and the lesson is the adhan for the midday prayer.

The questioner : You did not ask.

The Shaykh : We did not ask you. Yes, the time has ended.
