Is it permissible for a traveler to shorten the prayer if he is behind a resident imam?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : A questioner says, O esteemedThe Shaykh : I am coming from a long journey, so the midday prayer became obligatory and its time arrived, so I combined it with the afternoon prayer, knowing that the imam had already prayed the afternoon prayer. I prayed the first two units of the afternoon prayer with him, then I concluded the prayer and completed the afternoon prayer with him. Is that permissible?

The Shaykh : From the midday prayer.

The questioner : He prayed the first two units of the midday prayer and prayed the last two units as the afternoon prayer.

The Shaykh : That is, he joined the imam in the midday prayer, prayed the first two units, then concluded the prayer considering it the midday prayer, then joined him in the third and fourth units considering them the afternoon prayer? This is not permissible, and he must now repeat both prayers in full, four units each. Why? Because when a person is with the imam, he must follow the imam, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
and pray whatever you get (with the people) and complete the rest which you have missed ما أدركتم فصلوا وما فاتكم فأتموا
Sahih al-Bukhari 635
And Ibn Abbas was asked:
What is the matter with a man who prays two units while traveling, but prays four units with the imam? He said: That is the Sunnah. ما بال الرجل في السفر يصلي ركعتين ومع الإمام يصلي أربعاً ؟ فقال : تلك هي السنة
So tell the brother: He must now pray four units for the midday prayer and four units for the afternoon prayer. Say, if Allah wills, may Allah reward you. Yes.
