Machine translationRead the Arabic original
In this noble verse, the direct address to the Children of Israel specifically points to their negligence, indicating that they will not be cured except through direct address
O Children of Israel
[Al-Baqarah 2:40]
.
Among its benefits is that it is obligatory for the Children of Israel to remember Allah’s favor upon them and to stand up to thank Him. Part of thanking Him is following whom? Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the clarification that this favor did not come through their earning, their toil, or inheritance from their fathers; rather, it is by what? By Allah’s favor upon them
which I have bestowed upon youأنعمت عليكم
. Thus, it highlights the grace.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is that the Children of Israel were the best of the people in their time, as He said:
and that I preferred you over the worlds.
[Al-Baqarah 2:47]
. Among its benefits is that when Allah the Exalted prefers someone with knowledge, wealth, or status, that is among the great favors, as He said:
and that I preferred you over the worlds.
[Al-Baqarah 2:47]
. He singled it out for mention due to its importance.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the differentiation among people, and that people are of different ranks. This is a known matter, even among the messengers, some being preferred over others, as Allah the Exalted said:
Those messengers - some of them We caused to exceed others.
[Al-Baqarah 2:253]
. And Allah the Exalted said:
And We have made some of the prophets exceed others
[Al-Isra 17:55]
. So by what is the preference? The preference is, first, a grace from Allah Mighty and Majestic. The minds may not grasp why Allah preferred these over those, but the comprehensive meaning is that whoever Allah has given knowledge, faith, and righteous deeds, that is the cause of his preference. Allah the Exalted said:
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees
[Al-Mujadila 58:11]
.
