Does the prohibition mentioned in the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (I was forbidden to recite the Qur'an while prostrating) include the supplications found in the Qur'an, meaning is it permissible for a Muslim to make these supplications while prostrating?

The questioner : This questioner says: I am asking about the hadith of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) which means, "I was forbidden to recite the Qur'an while prostrating." Does this prohibition include the supplications present in the Qur'an, meaning is it permissible for a Muslim to make these supplications while prostrating?

The Shaykh : The saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
"I have been forbidden to recite the Qur'an while bowing or prostrating; so while in the bowing (position) glorify (the Perfection of) the Rabb (Lord), and while in the prostrating (position) be earnest in supplication, for it is fitting that your supplications may be answered." ألا وإني نهيت أن أقرأ القرءان راكعا أو ساجدا فأما الركوع فعظّموا فيه الرب وأما السجود فأكثروا فيه من الدعاء فقمِن أن يستجاب لكم
Bulugh al-Maram 2:179
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that he was forbidden to recite the Qur'an while bowing or prostrating, not that he was forbidden to supplicate with the Qur'an. So there is a difference between supplicating with the Qur'an and reciting the Qur'an. The one who supplicates with the Qur'an does not intend recitation, but rather intends supplication. So if a person says in his prostration
Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." رَبَّنا ءاتِنا فِي الدُّنيا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنا عَذابَ النّارِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:201]
without intending recitation, then this is permissible. And if he says in his prostration
[Who say], "Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower. رَبَّنا لا تُزِغ قُلوبَنا بَعدَ إِذ هَدَيتَنا وَهَب لَنا مِن لَدُنكَ رَحمَةً إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الوَهّابُ
[Ali 'Imran 3:8]
intending supplication and not recitation, he is not reciting the Qur'an in prostration. For this reason, the one in a state of major ritual impurity does not recite the Qur'an, but if he supplicates with a supplication from the Qur'an, that is permissible. So if the one in a state of major ritual impurity says
[Who say], "Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower. رَبَّنا لا تُزِغ قُلوبَنا بَعدَ إِذ هَدَيتَنا وَهَب لَنا مِن لَدُنكَ رَحمَةً إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الوَهّابُ
[Ali 'Imran 3:8]
not intending recitation but intending supplication, there is no blame on him. So we must know the difference between reciting the Qur'an which is intended for recitation, and supplicating with what came in the Qur'an. The first does not occur in bowing and prostration, and the second occurs in prostration. As for bowing, it is better for a person to repeat what is in it of glorifying the Lord, Mighty and Majestic. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
