How do we reconcile the saying of Allah the Exalted, "And you are not one who can make those in the graves hear," with the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to the slain of Badr?

The Shaykh : Yes

The questioner : May Allah reward you. He says:The questioner : How do we reconcile the saying of Allah the Exalted:
but you cannot make hear those in the graves. وما أنت بمسمع من في القبور
[Fatir 35:22]
with the story of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conversing with the people of the pit of Badr?

The Shaykh : Yes, the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
but you cannot make hear those in the graves. وما أنت بمسمع من في القبور
[Fatir 35:22]
means that you do not hear these people accepting your call to the truth, just as if you went to the cemetery to call them, they would not hear you. It does not mean that the people in the graves do not hear; the people in the graves do hear.
It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when a man is buried and his companions leave him, he hears the sound of their sandals. It was also mentioned in a hadith narrated by Abu Dawud, authenticated by Ibn 'Abd al-Barr, and approved by Ibn al-Qayyim in his book *Al-Ruh* (The Soul), that if a person stands at a grave he knows and greets the deceased, Allah returns the soul of the person in the grave, and he returns the greeting to the one who greeted him. However, the meaning of the verse "You are not one who can make those in the graves hear" is that if you went to the people in the cemetery and called them to Allah, they would not hear from you, just as those polytheists did not accept your call.
